Headworx Welsh Open 2005
The BPSA is on the way to Wales for the Headworx Welsh Open
The 5th leg of the BPSA Tour heads to Wales this month for the Headworx Welsh Open at Wales best beach break, Freshwater West. The Headworx Welsh Open runs over the weekend commencing 24th September and has a 1 star rating with £2000 prize money. The event also includes a womens event with a 1 star rating and £500 purse and the Freerange Sports Optics Style Move of the Day, which is Best Cutback and rewards £250.
The Headworx Welsh Open contest site will be based at Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire near the National Park. The wave at Freshwater is a fast and hollow beach break that picks up any swell available and works on all tides. The water conditions are really clean with the only dangers being very strong rips. Fresh West is a great contest site and the BPSA Pros will be very excited to head over to Wales finest.
The BPSA title race is very close at the moment with Headworx team rider Reubin Pearce currently leading the charge, closely followed by Mark Harris and Llewellyn Whittaker. In the ladies tour Nicole Morgan has a strong lead over Gwen Spurlock in second place having won both of the previous events. Although there is no junior event Oli Adams is leading the tour with Matt Capel, another Headworx rider in third place.
Headworx, under new management, have come back strongly into the UK surf scene. Under their new marketing manager, Ben Byfield, Headworx have signed two heavyweights for their surf team in the shape of current BPSA Champion of Champions, Reubin Pearce and Current BPSA Junior Champion Matt Capel. On top of their current titles both surfers took out their categories at the last leg (at time of writing) of the tour, The Kangaroo Poo Watersplash Open in Jersey. Both surfers dominated their heats on the way to their final victories and are definitely the surfers to beat at present.
On whether winning and securing Headworx sponsorship might be connected, Matt explained: : Its just great to have a sponsor who wants me to ride my own way and express my own personality in and out of the water. At the end of the day, Im just another person doing my best to enjoy life! Im stoked to be given the opportunity to challenge my surfing day in day out, and to have the freedom to be myself.
Reubin also had this to say: Headworx is a legendary brand with real history and heritage and Im pleased to be flying their colours. Its great to be given the opportunity to pursue my surfing career with their support. The encouragement I receive gives me the self-belief to challenge my goals in my own way.
Dave Reed, BPSA Chairman said: Headworx has come back strongly with a great surf team and by backing this up with the event sponsorship they are doing a lot for British Surfing. A big thanks and welcome to Headworx and we look forward to working with them.
Elsewhere at the event, Fosters will be bringing their mobile bar unit and Barbie to feed and water the competitors and event staff and as always a massive thanks goes out to all the sponsors, especially Headworx as title sponsors and tour sponsors Fosters, Freerange and Cadburys Boost, who also follow the tour boosting energy with their tasty little treats.
