HURLEY & RED BULL BREAK THE BANKS OF THE WADDEN ISLES
De Bilt, October 13th 2005 Exotic locations such as Tahiti, Seychelles and Hawaii have long
been the Mecca of surf. But whilst their perfectly formed barrels have been the subject to
unrelenting media interest over the past 30 odd years it’s time to re-focus our attention on some
of the European coastline.
“But European breaks have been equally saturated by trips!” you protest.
Wrong.
Casting an eye over towards the base of the North Sea you will find a series of islands fully exposed to the
rumbling lows that have been generating pumping swells unbeknown to the vast majority…
…until now.
Based only a few kilometers off the Dutch and German coast the Wadden Islands may not be blessed
with Indo like temperatures or reefs but they sure as hell pump during September / October. Thanks to
strong tidal differences through this section of the North Sea the Wadden Islands have quietly been
sculpting numerous sandbanks off their shores, resulting in some unique breaks.
Hurley and Red Bull have teamed up to take on one of the most innovative trips the surf community has
seen for years. The semi-inhabited islands will be visited for the first time by an international trip that can
at last put the darkest corner of European surf onto the map.
Only the most hardened Dutch surfers have ever tried to pull into the ‘Gnarly Bowl’, perhaps the one
known spot, situated just off the coat of Den Helder. This leaves vast empty seas to discover and session
for the first time.
In order to forge a path into the North Sea and be on the right spot on the right time the 14 selected
riders are invited on a 105ft off-shore casino that will prowl the coast taking on the heaviest breaks. Whilst
they’re not gambling on the conditions out on the banks they will be turning their attention to the roulette
wheel: their currency will be the chips they earn from one another for the most progressive style they
demonstrate on their quivers.
