RIP CURL PRO PIPELINE MASTERS > HAWAII > 35° ANNIVERSARIO
From the 8th to the 20th of December ’05, the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters celebrates its 35th anniversary
In 1971, Fred Hemmings, 1968’ world champion, founds the first Pipeline Masters, then called the « Hawaiian Masters ». Only six surfers, $1000 of prize money, and Jeff Hakman wins the inaugural title of Pipeline Master. Pipeline is a “mythical” contest, and one of the most coveted of the WCT. Because performing at Pipeline brings credibility, and having a Rip Curl Pipe trophy in the bag cements a surfer as truly great.
In 35 years of existence, Pipeline has seen the best and most talented surfers in the world : from the Ho brothers to Gerry Lopez, to the local Sunny Garcia or more, to Kelly Slater, the most titled rider on this contest. No matter how skilled and technically difficult surfing becomes, it still comes down to the simplest line in the sport: the drop, the subtle adjustment, and the long, draining tuberide. Strong and amazing feelings for the surfers as well as for the people, always more numerous on the beach.
This year, Jamie O’Brien will have to defend his title and the competition may be tense. As for the world champion title, the final fight won’t happen at Pipe; Kelly Slater having won it during the Nova Shin WCT in Brazil. But they can still go with two important titles: the Vans Triple Crown and the Pipeline Master. So you can’t miss the Pipeline contest! The 2004 event was a success for Rip Curl: an incredible ambience, amazing waves for a perfect surf, and Jamie O’Brien, team rider and local surfer winning the competition and the title. This year, all the bets are open: will Jamie be again victorious? who will come to the overcome famous "reef break”: Jamie, Andy, Kelly,…?
