Longboards and Mars by Roger Smith, surf guide at www.dawnpatrol.co.za

I’ve discovered two things recently. That I can see Mars. And longboards. In the case of longboards that should read “rediscovered”! Mars hangs in the sky overhead every night, burning bright orange. Rekindles old thoughts in my mind about us, the solar system, galaxies, and the (infinite?) universe. In the seventies I surfed a longboard on and off and loved it. Now I have to leave it at home, otherwise I don’t surf my shortboard! I used to battle to swop my thruster for the 9 footer and vice versa, but now I have new software downloaded in my brain that enables me to surf the one like the other. Isn’t modern technology great? Our winters deliver long lines with offshores almost every day or at least into the afternoon. Sometimes it’s BIG. That’s when I can’t bear temptation any longer, and sneak out between sets on the 9 ft. beast. Paddling in is easy and I catch twice as many waves. My mates curse me, but I just laugh.
My love affair with the round nose single fin tanker blossoms every time I take off on her.

Can somebody help to cure me of this addiction that is developing in my mind?

Louis and Roger run Dawnpatrol, a surf tour operator based in East London on South Africa’s south east coast. They and their support team move up and down the coast, surfing the best waves on offer between Jeffrey’s Bay and the Natal South Coast. Check out their site at www.dawnpatrol.co.za.
